Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a term that encompasses a variety of lung diseases and is characterized by chronic breathlessness. COPD is commonly caused from long-term smoking but non-smokers can develop COPD as well from over-exposure to irritants that damage the lungs.

COPD can also occur from a genetic deficiency called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD). Very few people develop COPD because of this genetic predisposition.

Symptoms

  • Increased breathlessness
  • Tightness in chest
  • Wheezing
